“IT’S BRITNEY, BITCH!”: BETWEEN THE GOOD AND EVIL OF FEMALE BODIES

Abstract

 In this article, we focus on the senses mobilized from the figure of pop culture, Britney Spears, and how these constructions are used as an ideal or not ideal model of conduct (Butler, 2003). In this context, we reflect on the female body (Butler, 1999; Le Breton, 2007; Louro, 2018) which is socially marked, understanding, mainly, that the construction of
these bodies is strongly influenced by religious discourses. By pointing out the participation
of the Church in the construction of female bodies, we study biblical representations such as Eve and Lilith (Assis; Muneratto, 2013; Wandermurem, 2007), in addition to the pagan figuration of witches (Kolinski Machado; Silva, 2021; Zordan, 2005), that together expose this duality between light and darkness. For this, we used the concept of media
event (França; Lopes, 2017; Simões, 2012a, 2012b) to recognize indications based on the exploration of different “media texts”, the meanings and representations produced and, then, analyze from them the meanings that crossed Britney Spears’ body and what it reveals about expected female behaviors.

Karla Beatriz Cézar de Paulo Rezende, Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto

Graduated in Journalism from the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP). She is currently a Master's student in the Graduate Program in Communication at the Federal University of Ouro Preto (PPGCOM UFOP), with a scholarship from the Research Support Foundation of the State of Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG).

Felipe Viero Kolinski Machado Mendonça, Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto

He is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Journalism (DEJOR) at the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP) and Permanent Professor at the Graduate Program in Communication at the Federal University of Ouro Preto (PPGCOM UFOP).
