Abstract
Introduction: Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, considered the main cause of morbidity and mortality, and can affect the quality of life and functionality. Objective: To evaluate the nutritional profile and quality of life of adult patients with chronic GVHD (cGVHD). Methodology: Observational study with adult patients of both genders with cGVHD. A nutritional assessment was carried out using questionnaires, anthropometric assessments, and dietary assessments. We used the Student’s T test and the Mann-Whitney test to compare variables between sexes, the chi-square test to evaluate the association between categorical variables, and Spearman’s linear correlation (p<0.05). Results: Of the 32 participants, 75% were male with a mean age of 41.3 ± 11.9 years. 56,2% were identified as overweight and 25% as malnourished. An association was observed between physical activity and degree of cGVHD (p=0.04), moderate and directly proportional correlations between nutritional profile and quality of life with a significant difference (r = 0.54 e p<0.01) and moderate and inversely proportional between muscular strength and limitation (r = -0.36) with a significant difference (p = 0.04). We found an average intake of 1761.6 ± 783.1 kcal/day and 91.15 ± 43g/day of proteins, an adequacy of 69.5% ± 31.6% and 68% ± 30.2% of the recommended amount, respectively. Conclusion: The low energy and protein intake, nutritional status, degree, and organs affected by cGVHD highlight the importance of specialized nutritional intervention to improve the quality of life of these patients.
