Abstract

Introduction:Mortality rates from oral cancer can be influenced by several factors. Objective: Analyze the association between social determinants and the mortality rate from oral cancer in municipalities in Bahia from 1997 to 2017. Methodology: This is an ecological study carried out using a set of panel data. The mortality rate was calculated per 100 thousand inhabitants and the social determinants were represented by the illiteracy rate, percentage of the male population, number of beds per thousand inhabitants, average household income per capita and the index of people living below the poverty line. Results: A descriptive analysis of the time series of mortality rates was carried out, evaluating the heterogeneity of rates depending on space and time, as well as the characterization of social determinants by municipalities. The analysis to verify the association was carried out using the multivariate negative binomial regression model, through Poisson regression. During the period studied, 2083 deaths from oral cancer occurred in 17 municipalities in Bahia. In the association analysis, it was found that municipalities with an increase in the illiteracy rate showed a reduction in the mortality rate from oral cancer (p=0.00) and those with an increase in the proportion of men also showed an increase in mortality rates (p =0.03). Conclusion: It was noted that large municipalities in Bahia had high mortality rates from oral cancer, demonstrating a negative association between the mortality rate and the illiteracy rate and a positive association with the percentage of the male population.
