The practice of Dentistry exposes professionals and students to pathogenic microorganisms due to frequent contact with aerosols, blood, saliva, and sharp instruments, representing a potential risk of infection transmission. Among the main biosafety measures, the sterilization of materials through autoclaving stands out, and its monitoring must be carried out using physical, chemical, and biological indicators. This study evaluated, through a multiple-choice questionnaire, the knowledge and use of these monitoring methods by dentists and dental students in the city of Salvador, Brazil. The results revealed weaknesses in the understanding and systematic application of sterilization monitoring processes, whether by physical, chemical, or biological methods, particularly regarding the adoption of the gold-standard test, the frequency of indicator use, and the definition of monitoring responsibilities. It is concluded that there are still gaps in the consolidation of proper practices and in the dissemination of biosafety standards, reinforcing the need for continuous education and professional training strategies to ensure safer clinical environments and minimize the risks of cross-infection.
