Abstract

In this text I try to point out certain characteristics of a subway system by examining its urban furniture and operational factors. Then I describe how those characteristics develop in the Rio subway and how a diverse social milieu is produced in this context. Finally, considering the physical and social characteristics of these collective facilities, I explore the situations of communication which unfold during the solitary – often silent – journeys in the Rio subway.
