PRO-CHOICE VS. PRO-LIFE:
A SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS OF COMMUNICATIONAL STRATEGIES IN ONLINE AND FACE-TO-FACE DEBATES ON THE DECRIMINALIZATION OF ABORTION

From the improvement of the methodology that aims to verify the role of interaction in the formation of preferences and opinions, this article compares the communication strategies adopted by individuals in online and face-to-face debates regarding the decriminalization of abortion. Based on a broader perspective of deliberation, which deems everyday conversation as being essential to decision-making, this study consists of a content analysis conducted in two different corpora: an online corpus, which comprised 5,777 comments from Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter on discussions around the subject; and a face-to-face corpus, consisting of a public hearing summoned by the Federal Senate to debate the 5,581 Direct Action of Unconstitutionality, which guarantees the right to abortion for pregnant women contaminated by the Zika Virus. Data were analyzed using 14 variables that describe the type of thinking, theme, form, opinion justification, source of justification, rhetorical strategies, and argumentative resources – as described by Stromer-Galley (2007). Both corpora indicate that most discourses on the theme pertain to men, who likewise tend to position themselves against decriminalization in online conversations more than female users. Whereas people who maintain a favorable opinion towards decriminalization present structural arguments, those in opposition to it adopt an interpersonal discourse. In both environments, individuals justify their positions mostly based on their experience or personal opinion; however, in online environments, sarcasm, analogies, and insults are more recurring. The results allow the outline of a series of hypotheses regarding this type of conversation, which could be verified in future researches.
