Abstract: This article presents some results of a media ethnography of a Brazilian Big Brother on-line fan community in order to engage in a debate around key issues regarding the “convergence culture”. The main argument put forward in this piece challenges the view that a “collective intelligence” with potentially positive socio-political consequences is the natural outcome of the so-called participatory culture, as proposed by Henry Jenkins and Pierre Lévy. Some fans of the local franchise of Big Brother TV show seem to be more engaged in disputes for prestige, hierarchy, and subcultural capital than in developing a common knowledge capable of challenging economical and corporate interests.Downloads
