Abstract

This study investigates the symbolic functions inherent in the photographs published in the alternative newspaper Verbo Encantado, highlighting the communication processes involved in constructing narratives about everyday life in the city of Salvador, Bahia, in the early 1970s. The images featured in the periodical reveal multiple dimensions of urban life in Salvador from a countercultural perspective, bringing to light public spaces, popular festivities, and emblematic figures. The study thus discusses photographs as technical images capable of conveying specific meanings, functioning as important historical traces. It is argued that, in Verbo Encantado, the images transcend mere visual representation, operating as devices of memory, identity, and cultural resistance. The images are actively integrated into the periodical’s journalistic discourse, which is marked by an anti-authoritarian, experimental, and, above all, distinctly Bahian stance.
