Infrastructures of vision: coloniality, algorithms, and visual insurgency in Brazilian memory

This study critically analyzes the regimes of visuality that structure Brazilian visual memory, examining the historical and contemporary articulation among coloniality, institutionalization, and algorithmic mediation. Adopting a qualitative, critical, and documentary approach, grounded in critical theory, decolonial studies, and technology critique, the research investigates how archives, institutions, and digital platforms reproduce racial and epistemic hierarchies under discourses of neutrality and diversity. The results indicate the persistence and renewal of colonial logics of seeing, intensified by opaque algorithmic governance. In contrast, insurgent practices by Indigenous peoples and Black communities, which propose relational ontologies of the image and build counter-archives, challenge dominant paradigms, pointing to possibilities for visual justice, albeit conditioned by asymmetrical technical infrastructures.
