This paper analyzes the representation of female madness in the Brazilian soap opera Mulheres Apaixonadas (2003), focusing on the character Heloísa, who is an obsessively jealous of her husband and exhibits unstable behavior. It is proposed that the character’s visuality, in a sequence chosen for analysis, reenacts archetypes of the insane woman in art and dialogues with the psychiatric iconography of Bourneville. Based on Abril’s studies on visuality and gaze, we seek to understand how the soap opera acts as a discursive media space that, by staging and exploring Heloísa’s madness, positions the viewer in a role of surveillance and moral judgment of the character. We perceive that Heloísa’s narrative is constructed upon historical tropes of female hysteria and that the pathologization of her love serves as a narrative strategy to discipline and contain the female body that transgresses expectations of submission.
