The production and diffusion of the Cine Jornal Informativo (1946–1950)

Abstract

This article describes and analyzes elements of the production, distribution, and especially exhibition in commercial movie theaters of the Cine Jornal Informativo from 1946 to 1950, that is, during the presidency of Eurico Gaspar Dutra. This newsreel was produced by the Agência Nacional, an agency of the Ministério da Justiça e Negócios Interiores, and aimed to publicize and promote acts of the federal government, with emphasis on the president of the Republic. The research gathered names of professionals who worked on the production of the newsreel, as well as information about its distribution and exhibition in the cities of São Paulo, São Luís, Florianópolis and Manaus. The survey on the circulation of the Cine Jornal Informativo shows that the audience reached was the working class in large cities and broader in social terms in capitals with smaller populations.

Professor Titular de História do Audiovisual no Depto. de Artes e Comunicação da UFSCar. Doutor pelo Instituto de Artes da Unicamp. Autor dos livros Alex Viany: crítico e historiador, Imagens do negro na cultura brasileira e O pensamento industrial cinematográfico brasileiro. Dirigiu os documentários Minoria absoluta e A política do cinema. Integrou o Conselho da Cinemateca Brasileira.
