Although it is normally considered as a universal artistic genre, the melodrama is seldom contemplated in the context of the Asian community. As a historically Western concept, can it really be used to define Eastern artistic representations? This essay argues that “melodrama” can indeed be used in the Asian context, provided that it observes some of the particularities of the culture that is being represented. Through the analysis of the South Korean television series Dae Jang Geum, a worldwide audience phenomenon, we shall observe more closely what are those particularities and universalities of the Asian melodrama.Downloads
