This paper reflects on the constructions of meaning in Beyoncé’s Black Is King, which triggers the idea of a reimagined and fabled Africa. By presenting positive elements related to the concepts of Black and Blackness, the film breaks with Western images of control over racialized peoples, showing them in other ways, as in the performances of pregnancy and motherhood depicted in the production. With a nonlinear narrative, unusual in the so-called mainstream culture, Black Is King retrieves the past in a similar attitude to the Sankofa bird, which returns to seek what is its own. The film unfolds in images, songs, and stories that evoke a spiraling time that comes and goes, reinventing a stolen past and proposing, in the present, other places and imagery for Black bodies.
