This article aims to critically reflect on the potential concept of “fluid journalism,” coined by Dutch broadcaster NPO’s executive Ezra Eeman when analyzing the adoption of generative AI in journalism. Based on a review of the history and evolution of digital journalism and the incorporation of generative AI, an analysis of the Time AI project, and bibliographic research on the term, we conclude that there is academic support for the idea, which in practice represents a deeper and greater use of characteristics already identified in Digital Journalism: multimodality, interactivity, and personalization. In this sense, Fluid Journalism is content that alternates fluidly across different formats, based on the user’s intention. At the same time, we argue that this type of content still requires greater scale and volume for the effective applicability of Fluid Journalism as a concept and a new stage in the history of digital journalism.
