Complexity, Non-linearity, Non-perennial riversAbstract
The text discusses the complexity of non-perennial rivers in drylands, characterized by intermittent flows and dynamics influenced by factors such as climate, geology, and land use. These rivers face increasing challenges due to environmental degradation driven by human activities, climate change, and uncontrolled development. The analysis of non-perennial rivers reveals that, unlike perennial channels, they operate in a state of non-equilibrium, exhibiting nonlinear hydrological responses and variability. Geomorphological changes are often reactive to intense climatic events and inappropriate land-use practices. The text emphasizes that the recovery of degraded rivers requires an integrated approach, considering both the natural resilience of systems and human interventions. Strategies such as controlling invasive species and reintroducing native flora are highlighted as essential for ecological restoration. Finally, adaptive management is necessary due to the unpredictability of nonlinear dynamics and the variability of fluvial ecosystems. Understanding the interactions between environmental factors and river responses is crucial for promoting sustainability and the recovery of semi-arid fluvial ecosystems.
