THE EARTH AS TEXT: HUMBOLDT AND THE INAUGURAL GESTURES OF A GEOPOETICS

Abstract

This paper aims to locate, in the scientific literature, elements that contribute to the construction of an interpretative basis for the geopoetic dimension present in the work and attitudes of Alexander von Humboldt. We start from the hypothesis that his thought, permeated by the spirit of Romanticism, articulates science, sensitivity and aesthetics in a unique way, opening paths for a poetic understanding of the Earth. To this end, we adopted a qualitative methodological approach, based on the author's case study and a narrative bibliographic review. The choice of these strategies allows for an in-depth and sensitive reading of Humboldt's contributions, especially regarding the way in which the author perceives, describes and relates to nature. Influenced by Romantic thinkers such as Goethe and Schelling, Humboldt proposes a science that approaches art and aesthetic experience, constructing a writing in which empirical data coexists with lyricism and admiration. By considering nature as a living and interconnected totality, his work is configured as a sensitive cartography of the world, in which knowledge emerges from amazement and an emotional relationship with the territory. Thus, Humboldt can be understood not only as a scientist, but as a precursor of what is now called geopoetics.
