INTERMEDIALITY AND INTERTEXTUALITY IN ON EARTH WE’RE BRIEFLY GORGEOUS (2019) BY OCEAN VUONG

The aim of this study was to analyze intermediality and intertextuality in the inclusion of allusions to French scholar Roland Barthes (1915-1980) in the letter written by Little Dog, the protagonist of the novel On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (2019) by Vietnamese American author Ocean Vuong (1988-). More specifically, they are references to the books Le plaisir du texte (1973), Roland Barthes par Roland Barthes (1975), and Journal de deuil (2009), which feature varied textual configurations. Therefore, it was necessary to identify how dialogues occur between the letter and the formats of the other works through language. Subsequently, to investigate the thematic connections between passages in Little Dog’s letter and excerpts from Barthes’ texts. Finally, to describe how the impact of these connections contributes to the construction of meanings in the structure and content of the novel. The theoretical framework was primarily established by studies of Clüver (2009; 2011) on the interaction between different media and Rajewsky (2012; 2015; 2020) on the subcategories involving media entanglements. The results showed that intermediality enhances the structural complexity of the epistolary novel, while intertextuality highlights the literary inheritances on the themes, perspective, and writing style of the narrator.
