Abstract

The text is a transcript of the author's speech at Panel 01 “Female Bodies and the Street” of the Gendered Cities Colloquium. Diana Helene Ramos analyzes the urban segregation of prostitution from the perspective of the relationship between gender, public space, and removal processes, highlighting how the stigma of "whore" operates as a historical mechanism for controlling female bodies. The author discusses the recurring expulsion of prostitutes in urban redevelopment projects and demonstrates how race, cisnormativity, and morality structure inequalities and violence in the use of the city.
