Cooperatives are one of the most important forms of collective action in contemporary society. Since the 19th century, their work has been guided by a distinct identity, based on four main pillars – an identity statement (the concept of a cooperative), brand, values, and principles – which are expressed through the skills, practices, rites, and institutions that shape the cooperative culture of each country. In light of the current global crisis, this essay discusses the role of the concept of value for the future of cooperativism and its contribution to the sustainability of food systems. It argues that Brazilian cooperatives must see value as a key element to reinforce their identity, thereby addressing the challenges of building a more sustainable economy with social justice and environmental preservation. Ultimately, it concludes that significant progress will depend on legal and institutional reforms that strengthen both democracy and the cooperative culture in the country.
