THE TRANSITIVITY SYSTEM UNDER THE OPTICS OF PERSPECTIVE OF SYSTEMIC-FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS:
AN ANALYSIS OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES IN JOURNALISTIC NEWS OF THE 19TH CENTURY

Under the optics of perspective Systemic Functional Linguistics, the main objective of this study is to relate the use of Circumstances in Material Processes (which express doing and happening), as defined within the transitivity system, to the communicative purposes of the journalistic news genre, based on Halliday (1979), Halliday (1994), Halliday and Matthiessen (2004), and Martin and Rose (2008). The analysis of the corpus, consisting of 30 journalistic news from the 19th century, collected from the VARPORT/UFRJ database, showed that 82.6% of the identified Circumstances are related to Material Processes, and of that total, 61.4% are directly related to processes of happening. These percentages indicate an important difference regarding the focus of information in the Material Processes of doing and happening in the analyzed news.
