Paiter Surui Sign Language

Sign languages have been increasingly studied around the world and are an important contribution to research into the registration of unofficial sign languages. This research used signs recorded by Eler, Costa, and Gregianini (2017), extending the analysis to the structure of Paiter Surui sign language signs, following the contributions of knowledge production based on the post-critical research methodologies of Meyer and Paraíso (2012), based on the universal canons for sign languages based on Brentari (1998). The aim was to find eight basic characteristics that any signed language includes. The deaf indigenous Paiter Suruí to whom this research refers live in the Sete de Setembro Indigenous Land of the Paiter Suruí, located on the border between the states of Mato Grosso and Rondônia. The analysis of the signs was based on theoretical research by Brentari (1998) on ASL, Quadros (2019) and Ferreira (2010) on Libras, looking for commonalities between LSPS, ASL and Libras. The material analyzed is valuable because it provides continuity to existing studies, facilitating the production of new knowledge based on the present ones. As a result, we found six of the eight characteristics described by Brentari (1998) in LSPS. The hypothesis is that the other two characteristics may appear in the course of recording and documenting this language.
