Abstract

This article presents the results obtained from the offer of the Basic Libras Course by the University of the State of Minas Gerais, in an Extension initiative, through the Coordination of Distance Learning, attending to the demand of the Secretary of State for Social Development, in training of professionals who work at the posts of the National Employment System, in the different cities of Minas Gerais. The theoretical assumptions of this work include communication accessibility, through Libras (MOURA et al., 2021; BRASIL, 2002; 2005; 2015), in addition to the teaching of this visual-space language in the Distance Education modality (SANTOS et al. 2015; SILVEIRA, 2022). The course was carried out by the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Moodle and its menu included topics aimed at the needs of the target audience, divided into five learning units, developed from various VLE resources. At the end of the course, students answered an evaluation questionnaire, demonstrating that, in general, the initiative fulfilled its main objective of promoting communication accessibility during the assisting deaf and hard of hearing people who seek job opportunities via the public employment system, training professionals to be more aware of the linguistic-cultural specificities of the deaf.
