O Judeu of Bernardo Santareno
and your parallels between the Inquisition and the Salazarism

The play O Judeu (1966) follows the life of the playwright António José da Silva (1705-1739), also known as o Judeu (the Jew), an artist of Jewish origin persecuted by the Portuguese Inquisition. With this in mind, the fact that the author, Bernardo Santareno (1920-1980), used this story to criticize the Portuguese Estado Novo (1933-1974), especially during Salazar’s dictatorship, kindled and motivated the research that resulted in the monograph adapted in this paper. The concepts of Self-Writing (KLINGER, 2006) and Testimonial Literature (ROTH, 2022) are used to discuss how the author, through the protagonist and the character Cavaleiro de Oliveira - the play's commentator-narrator inspired by the 18th century Portuguese writer Francisco Xavier de Oliveira (1702 - 1783) - writes himself and gives his voice based on what they shared: being artists persecuted in their time who used art as escapism and a resistance. This analysis is carried out also from other characters presented in the play, as the women in the life of António José da Silva and the Estudante Pálido, and the parallels that can be drawn between the Inquisition and Salazarism and the critique that it brings.
