Karamazov brothers and medical education:
What is the meeting point?
Abstract
Studies highlight the importance of including the arts, especially literature, in the medical curriculum, in order to deepen attitudinal skills such as empathy, compassion, listening to others and self-care. Thinking about being a doctor, in this reflection I propose, is exactly that: being in the world, affected by everything that is presented to us along the way. Recognize the discomfort we feel when witnessing the pain of others (and ours), and from there, act appropriately, in addition to the exercise of biomedical technique. This is a qualitative study, based on the analysis of the characters of the brothers in the book Brothers Karmazov, by Fiódor Dostoievski, and the expected profile of graduates from medical courses, with the characteristics described in the National Curricular Guidelines (DCNs), of 2014. I chose three situations from history, which can address the themes of humanist training: attentive listening, welcoming, empathy, reflection on the extended role of the doctor and the concept of care. Studying the subject, with its Dostoevtian Itinerary for existential health, brought me many discoveries and reflections for my career as a medical teacher, as well as for my personal training, which are important to share with teachers and students.
