Based on As filhas das lavadeiras (2002) by Helena do Sul, this analysis examines representations of Black motherhood in Brazilian literature, focusing on the axes of labor and "dororidade" (Piedade, 2017). Maria Helena Vargas da Silveira, a Black writer born in Pelotas, RS, published her first work at the age of 40. While white motherhood is linked to the ideal of sanctity and confinement, Black motherhood is defined by the role of breadwinner and the struggle against racial, class, and gender oppressions. Drawing from Badinter (1985) to discuss the "myth of maternal love," Evaristo (2005) on escrevivência, and Gonzalez (1982), Oyewumi (2021), and Piedade (2017) on the experiences of Black women, the book reveals how these mothers build identities through resilience and solidarity. By breaking stereotypes, Helena do Sul redefines motherhood in literature, honoring washerwomen’s stories and emphasizing the importance of understanding these experiences in shaping Brazil’s cultural identity.
