Women living with HIV, maternity and health: an integrative review

This integrative review investigates how women living with HIV see motherhood and the possibility of
pregnancy. We carried out a literature search for papers published between 2006 and 2016, in Portuguese, on the LILACS
and SciELO databases, with the following descriptors: HIV/AIDS; Vertical Transmission; Pregnancy; Maternity;
Qualitative. Of the 56 articles found, 19 were included for reviewing. The studies comprised seropositive women of reproductive age, on medical follow-up, with topics related to maternity. Our analysis highlighted seven thematic
categories: Socio-economic background of the sample; Family; Discussion about sexuality between health professionals
and women living with HIV; Little knowledge about HIV/AIDS and pregnancy; Unidirectional focus of assistance to
contain the risk of transmission; Training of health professionals; Feelings about motherhood. Although the desire of
seropositive women to become mothers remains unchanged, the lack of knowledge and support favors insecurity in
reproductive choices. A more welcoming health care setting, with trained professionals, can contribute to minimize health
problems for HIV positive women.
