This paper was guided by the following question: what expectations do university students have regarding contemporary Brazilian journalism? Its general objective was to contribute to the understanding of these expectations by categorizing them according to different models (theories) that explain the journalistic phenomenon. In order to do so, an online structured survey was offered to undergraduate students at a communitarian university located in São Paulo, Brazil. It was found that 40.6% of all respondents align their expectations with an idealistic and normative understanding of journalism, anchored in the journalist’s neutrality as a fundamental value; 32.9% understand journalism as a systematic distortion of reality and/or as an antagonistic force against their worldview; only 5.1% mentioned in their responses the understanding of the impossibility of a fully neutral language, accepting to some extent that journalists and media outlets may express their critical stances publicly and openly. This research may contribute to a better understanding of contemporary tensions in the field of journalism, in addition to supporting media education practices.
