Abstract

Objective: to understand the perceptions and coping strategies of parents in relation to the mental health of their children with gender incongruence. Method: single and incorporated qualitative case study, carried out in the gender and sexualities outpatient clinic of a teaching hospital. Eight mothers and three fathers participated. Interviews were carried out using a semi-structured script, and the data were analyzed using content analysis. Results: described in a single category, parents' perceptions revolve around the monitoring their children receive in mental health services, in addition to identifying their own suffering in relation to gender incongruity. As coping strategies, they seek to support their children's decisions and choices, recognizing their gender identity. Final considerations: the importance of health professionals recognizing families' experiences is highlighted, using tools such as the genogram, to develop care by enabling the identification of the closest person to provide support.
