Scientific and Patent Study of New Technological Opportunities for the Utilization of Cellulose Waste in Asphalt Slags

The generation of industrial waste is one of the many challenges faced by the pulp production chain. Innovative new technologies are being implemented for the efficient disposal and reuse of cellulose waste, aiming not only to reduce landfill volume within the industry itself but also to promote sustainable practices and contribute to environmental preservation.This article aims to analyze the scientific and patent landscape related to the use of cellulose waste in combination with slag, using the Web of Science and Scopus scientific databases, in addition to the Orbit patent technology database. The analysis identified 140 scientific publications in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, and 2.003 patent families in the Orbit database. The results show an increase in the number of scientific publications and a reduction in patent filings over the past seven years, starting in 2017. The main keywords associated with the patents and scientific publications are “Slag,” “Raw Material,” and “Fly Ash.” China stands out as the leading country of origin for these works. The findings indicate the feasibility of developing a new asphalt compound using cellulose waste, with stability, durability, and, most importantly, sustainability.
