Abstract

The article aims to discuss the importance of an ethics based on a specific view of love as integral for a non-monogamic practice that aspires to be able to challenge the patriarchal order to which it relates. The core argument centers in classifying capitalism as a deeply antiamorous system through the Marxist critique of political economy. Noting that patriarchy is instituted before the consolidation of capitalism, the conflituous relation that it establishes with romantic love shall be discussed by analyzing two pieces of literature, more specifically novels by Machado de Assis in which the triad love-marriage-jealousy emerges as a problem that, by the end, produces impasses and disagreements. The persistence of this contradiction over the course of centuries will drive the defense of the need to think love as an action.
