REPERCUSSIONS OF THE TRANSEXUALIZING PROCESS ON THE MENTAL HEALTH OF TRANSGENDER MEN

Abstract

Objective: to analyze the repercussions of the transsexualization process on the mental health of transgender men treated in spaces of care and reception of transgender people. Method: qualitative study carried out in two reception spaces for transgender people in northeastern Brazil. Participants were 18 transgender men who were experiencing the transsexualization process through the SUS. Semi-structured interviews were carried out and analyzed through thematic content analysis. Results: emerged as empirical categories: psychic suffering of transgender men before and during the transsexualization process; social network of transgender men; physical and psychological well-being of transgender men with the beginning of the transsexualization process and strategies of transgender men to deal with psychic suffering. Final considerations: recognizing the factors that impact the mental health of transgender men before and during the transsexualization process makes it possible to understand the psychic suffering that surrounds the lives of these people and what would be the protective factors for their mental health.
