Transgender people experiences with their families of origin

Abstract

Transgender perception about the experiences of their families of origin is a wispy studied object of study. This paper aims to investigate the perceptions of transgender people and their process of gender affirmation in the family context. It is a qualitative, exploratory and transversal study. Interviews were held with 14 participants between 20-30 years old in Northern state of Rio Grande do Sul. A semi-structured interview scrip and a sociodemographic data forma were used. Data analysis was executed with thematic analysis proposal. Two themes emerged: initial processes of family adjustment and gender affimation process actions inside the family group. These processes and these situations lead to a new family rearrangement. It is concluded that the perceptions of the experiences of transgender people with their families are complex and multifaceted, involving different processes, both positive and negative to the transgender person. It is expected that, with this study, families, institutions and health professionals can benefit to carry out affirmative care and support actions with this population.
