Abstract

The article discusses the results of an analysis of a didactic unit that is part of the second volume of English as foreign language textbook series #livingUruguay, produced and distributed in Uruguay. The selected unit, History Makers, presents historical characters and their contributions to humanity. The main objective was to understand who are represented and how their participation is valued. The theoretical bases that sustain the analysis include the conception of intersectionality, to discuss how the way the textbook explore the themes potentiates or limits a critical intercultural approach to the audience. The methodology implicated two main stages. First, I analyze how the written and visual resources used in the textbook are discursively constructed or involved to the audience based on the APPRAISAL system. On the other hand, I explore how the pedagogical activities associated with these resources explicitly demand reflections from the students. Through this study, it is possible to verify that the textbook advances in some questions, especially in historical feminine leadership. Therefore, from an intersectional perspective, I noticed a shallow treatment of the black women contributions and that can contribute to invisibility this social group.
